Boys Track & Field Earns 2025-26 Coastal League Title

SANTA MONICA— Geffen Academy’s track and field program delivered a standout performance at the Coastal League Championships, held across two days at two venues, showcasing record-breaking talent. Throwing events took place Friday at West Los Angeles College, while the remainder of the meet unfolded Monday evening at Santa Monica High School.

The Bruin boys emerged as Coastal League champions in dramatic fashion, edging out a tightly packed field. Geffen Academy secured the title with 113 points, narrowly ahead of CAMS (112) and HMSA (108), with Vistamar (71), Wildwood (41), and New Roads (12) rounding out the standings.

On the girls side, the Bruins placed second overall with 132 points, finishing behind HMSA (189) and ahead of CAMS (65), Wildwood (37), and Vistamar (26).

Record-Breaking Performances

The championships were highlighted by multiple school records and dominant individual efforts.

The girls relay teams set the tone early. The 4 x 100m relay team of Keira W., Abby A., Rayah R., and Sadie K. set a new school standard with a second-place finish in 53.61. The same core group—Lila N., Abby A., Keira W., and Sadie K. — went on to capture first place in the 4 x 400m relay in 4:32.68, setting another new school record.

Individually, Sadie K. delivered one of the most impressive performances of the meet, earning a “triple crown” by winning the 100m (13.20), 200m (27.36), and 400m (1:02.01), with her 400m effort setting a new school benchmark. Her impressive feats earned her Coastal League MVP distinction.

Distance standout Lila N. claimed first in the 800m (2:31.34) and added another school record in the 300m hurdles (55.34), while freshman Keira W. showed her promise with a strong second-place finish in the 800m (2:35.33).

In the field events, Makena D. dominated throws, winning both the discus (82’9”) and shot put (29’9”), with her shot put mark setting a new school record. Rayah R. added to the team’s success with a second-place finish in the high jump (4’6”).

Boys Power Their Way to Title

The Bruin boys relied on both sprinting strength and distance dominance to secure the conference title.

The 4 x 100m relay team of Ethan H., Aaron R., Genki M., and Roy R. sprinted to first place in 46.13, while the 4 x 400m relay team of Joaquin M., Leo K., Atticus S., and Ethan H. earned second in 3:52.23.

Roy R., returning from an early-season injury, made a remarkable comeback, winning both the 100m (11.76) and 200m (24.20). His 100m time set a new school record, edging out the mark previously held by Benjamin Mizrahi (11.79). Ethan H. added valuable points with a second-place finish in the 100m (12.01).

In the distance events, Sebastian M. delivered a dominant double victory, winning the 1600m (4:53.22) and 3200m (10:44.68), while in the field events, Lenny Z. contributed with a second-place finish in the shot put (31’1”).

Overcoming Early Challenges

Geffen Academy’s success was particularly impressive given the challenges the Bruins faced at the start of the spring season. With UCLA’s Drake Stadium closed for emergency repairs, the team was forced into a slower training buildup than usual.

Despite that setback, however, the program showed remarkable growth and cohesion.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this group,” said Program Director Nelson Aviles. “The positivity, the energy, and the way they’ve supported each other all season really showed at our championships. The athletes stayed focused and committed.”

Aviles also emphasized the team’s collective effort and attitude throughout the meet.

A Championship Effort

With a league title for the boys, a runner-up finish for the girls, and multiple school records set, Geffen Academy’s performance at the Coastal League Championships marks one of the most successful outings in program history.

The Bruins have nearly two dozen athletes that will now be moving on to the CIF Southern Section Divisional Preliminaries on Saturday, May 9 at Carpinteria High School.
