Varsity Volleyball Wins Third Straight Match, Advances To de Toledo Tournament Finals
WEST HILLS— Geffen Academy at UCLA will play in the de Toledo Girls Volleyball Tournament final on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. following a trio of impressive victories at the preseason tournament.
The Bruins took down Lighthouse Christian, Santa Paula and Milken Community School en route to the championship match, in which they will face host school de Toledo.
Monday’s match against Lighthouse Christian was a five-set barnburner with the school’s trading sets before Geffen Academy pulled away, 15-13, in the tiebreaker. The Bruins returned to the hardwood Tuesday to take down Santa Paula in straight sets, 3-0.
“We’ve talked a lot about getting a little better every time we step on the court,” Program Director Lorrie Vellutato said. “It’s still early, and there are plenty of things we can clean up, but I really like the way this group is competing and growing together.”
On Wednesday, Geffen Academy battled Milken, edging out the Wildcats in another five-set nailbiter that ended with a decisive 15-4 tiebreaker. Stellar serving from senior Ashley K. and strong defense from Chloe C. and Lucia K. highlighted the match, with Seri Y. connecting serves to outside hitter Ela A. Middle blockers Jessica P. and Anais F. also reinforced effort.
