Girls Volleyball Takes Down Lancaster In Playoff Opener

LANCASTER— Traveling north to Lancaster High School, Geffen Academy at UCLA muted the Eagles, 3-0, Wednesday in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Girls Volleyball Playoffs.

The Bruins jumped out to an early lead in the contest, leading Lancaster by as many as seven points en route to a 25-19 first set victory. However, Geffen Academy found a groove in set number two, coasting to a 25-12 win.

The third and final set proved to be the most competitive. A see-saw stretch saw the Bruins pull away 25-22 to sweep the match. Junior Ela A. led Geffen Academy with nine kills offensively.

“I was really impressed,” Program Director Lorrie Vellutato said. “It was a long bus ride up here and the team performed great.”

The Bruins will look to carry positive momentum into their second round contest, a home match at UCLA SAC Gym against a familiar foe in Coastal League rival CAMS. That match is slated for Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
