Bruins Boys win CIF-SS Division 5 Tennis Title
CLAREMONT– The Geffen Academy boys tennis team etched their names into the record books Friday, defeating West Covina High, 13–5, to claim the program’s first CIF Southern Section Boys Tennis Championship. The victory, earned at the prestigious Claremont Club, marked only the second CIF-SS title in Geffen Academy history across all sports.
The Bruins entered the final tilt of the year as underdogs against the 21–5 Bulldogs, but a dominant performance across both singles and doubles secured the milestone win. With the result decided by the end of the first rotation, Geffen Academy never looked back, finishing the season with an impressive 14–1 overall record.
“This victory is about more than a championship,” said David Collicutt, Geffen Academy’s Athletic Director. “It’s about the commitment our students and coaches have made to building something lasting — a culture of excellence and teamwork that defines Bruin Athletics.”
In singles play, junior Julian Rousseau-Tuan led the charge with a perfect 3–0 performance. Teammates Vincent Mirisch and River Lassoff also earned key victories to help establish the Bruins’ commanding lead.
Geffen’s doubles teams were nearly flawless, sweeping most of their matches. The standout pairings of Lachlan McDermott / Ethan Kalechstein (3–0) and Jacob Matlof / Tyler Aldave (3–0) anchored the Bruins’ success, while Oliver Lewis / Jackson Soowoo added valuable wins. Additional contributions came from Benson Klein, Ty Brennan, Max Goodman, and Jereth Liu, underscoring the team’s depth and unity.
Head Coach Juanra Lastra praised his squad’s determination and teamwork throughout the season, assisted by coach Julliana Simon.
The championship capped an extraordinary postseason run that included victories over Arroyo Valley (13–5), Ramona (13–5), Mayfair (12–6), and Westminster (10–8) on the road to the title.
With the win, Geffen Academy celebrates another milestone year in its growing athletics program — and the school’s second-ever CIF Southern Section championship.
