Bruins Shatter Records at CIF-SS Prelims, Lila N. Advances to Track & Field Finals
CARPINTERIA— On Saturday, May 9, a select group of Geffen Academy varsity track and field athletes delivered a historic performance at the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Prelims at Carpinteria High School. Competing against some of the top athletes in the region, the Bruins turned in a remarkable showing, breaking an astonishing thirteen school records over the course of the meet.
While the day was filled with standout performances, sophomore Lila N. delivered a defining moment. Racing in a highly competitive girls 800m, Lila surged to a school-record time of 2:24.17, earning a coveted spot in the CIF-SS Finals. She will compete next Saturday, May 16 at Moorpark High School, becoming the first Bruin track and field athlete to compete at the CIF-SS Finals event.
The Bruins’ success extended across sprints, distance events, relays, and field events.
The Bruins’ relay teams set the tone early. The girls 4x100m relay team of Rayah R., Sadie K., Abby S., and Keira W. clocked a school-record 53.46. Not to be outdone, the boys 4x100m relay team of Ethan H., Aaron R., Genki M., and Roy R. followed with a record-breaking 45.90. In longer relays, the girls 4x400m team (Abby A., Sadie K., Keira W., and Lila N.) posted a 4:23.23 school record, while the boys 4x800m squad of Atticus S., Alec U., Joaquin M., and Carter L. ran 9:09.86 to add another record to the tally.
Individually, several Bruins delivered exceptional performances: Sadie K. set school records in both the girls 100m (12.65) and 200m (25.66), while Roy R. matched the feat on the boys side with records in the 100m (11.47) and 200m (23.47). Keira W. initially broke the girls 800m school benchmark with a time of 2:31.49 before Lila N. surpassed it later in the meet.
Distance standout Sebastian M. added two more records, running 4:45.80 in the boys 1600m and 10:17.95 in the 3200m. In the field events, Makena D. set a record in the girls discus with a throw of 88’6”, while also competing in shot put (28’2.5”). Rayah R. cleared 4’6” in the girls high jump to round out the Bruins’ performances.
In total, Geffen Academy’s athletes turned in one of the most impressive meets in program history, showcasing both talent and determination on a championship stage.
